Guest post by Sarah Williams:
In the beginning: there was a friend
When my youngest child was about six months old, his little body was fighting something tough. He was so warm it scared me. Three of his siblings each had felt under the weather but bounced back after 24 hours. As a mom, I was frustrated and felt powerless that I couldn’t better help his little body feel well again. I’m committed to keeping questionable chemicals out of my home, my children, and myself – so I was torn about my options. I called a friend who had TEN kids and obviously had been through everything. “Have you tried essential oils?” she asked.
I took the plunge:
That was the beginning of my serious study into essential oils. I had heard of them before and even used them a couple of times. I was no stranger to the pursuit of natural living. When my oldest child was born over 7 years ago, I started on a journey to learn how to care for a baby (and then older children as they grew!) in the way that would best support their health and development. I started learning about nutrition, and then about other natural options to support health. I didn’t want to have to go to the doctor and spend that money, or use that many prescription drugs with possible side effects if there was a safer, more natural and effective option. I have found essential oils to be an amazing tool in keeping my family healthy.
In case you’re new to essential oils, here are the basics: Essential oils are compounds that occur naturally in plants – in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, or other parts. The oils inside the plant essentially act as the plant’s immune system. They protect the plant from environmental threats and keep the plant healthy. They have been used throughout history for their benefits for health care, beauty treatments, and cooking. So, ideally, you end up with only what comes out of the plant in your bottle of essential oil. Essential oils are antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, antiseptic, and antifungal. Plus, they smell amazing!
3 Ways to use oils:
There are three ways to use an essential oil: aromatically (by inhaling directly or using a diffuser), topically (by massaging onto the body or absorbed through the skin), and internally (only if you are using a high quality oil tested for purity).
My tips & tricks:
Here are some of my favorite little tips and tricks for the oils that I use: I use lavender for occasional bug bites, bee stings, and burns. Just the other day, I stepped on a wasp and got stung. I hobbled inside for the lavender, and just a couple of drops completely took care of that sting! Not to mention that lavender is very relaxing and wonderful to decrease stress at the end of the day and support sleep. Then there’s tea tree oil for occasional skin irritations like rashes or pimples. Frankincense is one I absolutely love, as it is very supportive of immune health and cellular health. I diffuse it, or put in on the bottom of my feet at night to support my immune function and target inflammation. (Did you know the bottom of your feet is the most absorbent part of your body?)
Keeping the Doctor Away:
Now that it’s back-to-school season, I rub the immunity/protective blend on my kids’ feet every night before bed, to support their immune systems as they are getting back into close proximity with bunches of kids and all that they carry. My husband appreciates the muscle soothing blend rubbed onto his lower back after a long day at work. I apply the digestion blend onto my kids’ tummies when they feel upset. One of my sons woke up in the middle of the night screaming over his stomach. After an unsuccessful trip to the bathroom, I rubbed the digestion blend on his tummy and he was calmly sleeping in minutes. I also love the respiratory blend for supporting kids’ breathing during the night. (When they aren’t waking up, I’m not waking up!) My husband is thankful having essential oils around just to make the house smell good. We have pets and kids and mess, but I wasn’t willing to use chemical-laden air fresheners. When I started diffusing essential oils, my husband was thrilled with the difference!
