WARNING:: Honey should not be used with children under 1 year of age, or with anyone that has an allergy to bees or bee products.
This remedy quiets coughs naturally and we have found it to be as effective at quieting night time coughs as any prescription or over the counter cold remedy. The American Academy of Pediatrics said out of studied home treatments, this is one of the most effective home treatments.
- Bring water to a boil
- While water boils add two Tablespoons of honey, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of elderberry syrup or dried elderberries to a cup.
- Pour boiling water over ingredients, stir together and let sit for 5-10 minutes.
- Strain elderberries if whole fruits were used.
- Serve warm. Keep a cup by the bed in case someone wakes up coughing.
DO NOT sweeten with sugar, sugar promotes the growth of bad bacteria and viruses.
To soothe sore throats you can add cloves and cinnamon.
Why it works:
Honey: Honey is antibacterial, antimicrobial, and healing. It soothes the mucous membranes and heals inflamed and irritated tissues.
You want RAW honey, because once honey is processed and heated it loses most of the beneficial antibacterial action.
If the cough and congestion are due to seasonal allergies it is best to use locally harvested honey. Locally harvested honey will have the added benefit being made from local pollen/allergen and will act as a sort of anti-allergen, helping you to build resistance to those irritants.
If you have a chance be sure to talk to your local honey producer find out if the honey is raw and if they feed their bees sugar water. Honey made by bees that eat sugar water will contain some sugar and will break down faster; also the sugar is not really good for you when you are sick.
If you can’t get local honey, other honey will still work for cough control.
LEMON: Lemon is a natural diuretic helping the kidneys to excrete toxins from the body. Lemon soothes the membranes and breaks down mucous that could be tickling the back of the throat. It is also helps to balance the ph of the body and fight off viruses and bacteria.
ELDERBERRY: Elderberry is an antiviral, antibiotic and full of antioxidants and vitamins. Study after study has proven elderberry to be an immune booster and virus fighter. Even conventional medical sites have instructions for using elderberry to treat cold, flu, and respiratory illnesses. I have posted 4 great links below. I’ll let the links speak for themselves.
